UPDATE: On October 11, 2011 California’s Governor, Jerry Brown signed SB 946, making California the 28th state to enact autism insurance reform. The law is scheduled to go into effect on July 01, 2012 and will require health plans and insurers to provide coverage for behavioral health treatment for pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) and autism. Covered treatment will include Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and other evidence-based behavior intervention programs.
On September 9, 2011, SB 946, the autism insurance reform bill was passed during the state legislative session. Under this bill, as of July 1, 2012, health plans and insurers must cover behavioral health treatment, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and other behavior intervention services.
California’s Governor Brown has until October 9 to sign the bill into law. Senator Steinberg will be hosting two rallies to urge Governor Brown to sign SB 946 and ensure access to Behavioral Health Treatment for California’s children and adults with autism. The first rally will be held on Monday September 26 at 12:00 pm at California’s State Capitol in Sacramento.
